Big Huge Games, headed by Civ 2 veteran Brian Reynolds, managed to craft a real-time strategy game that relied on more traditional turn-based ideas without sacrificing any of the immediacy of games like Age of Empires or Warcraft. Rise of Nations is a fantastic example of this. Drawing inspiration from the development of turn-based strategy games, particularly the 4X, empire-building series, these developers (and others) have incorporated more turn-based concepts into their real-time games resulting in some pretty sophisticated and compelling designs. In an era when the three big real-time strategy heavyweights have refined the genre so much that innovations seem impossible, along comes developers like Big Huge Games and Stainless Steel Studios.
